Hi {{first_name|nurse,}}

Two of America's biggest nursing markets. One pays $13K more per year. But the nurse in the "lower paying" city keeps basically the same amount.

Welcome to the weirdest salary comparison you'll see this year.

The Tale of Two Cities

Chicago and Austin are both nursing powerhouses. Chicago's got the legacy hospital systems and union strength. Austin's got the tech boom money and no state income tax.

On paper, Austin wins by a mile. But paper doesn't pay your mortgage.

The Numbers: Side by Side

What These Numbers Actually Mean

Let's be clear: Austin pays nurses $13,050 more per year. That's real money. But that entire advantage vanishes into thin air the moment you try to buy a house.

The average home in Austin costs $219,122 more than in Chicago. That's not a typo. The tech boom brought high-paying jobs, remote workers with California money, and a housing market that went completely sideways. Your monthly mortgage payment in Austin is $1,174 higher than Chicago.

Texas loves to brag about no state income tax. And yes, you save about $1,100 per year compared to Illinois. But that savings covers exactly one mortgage payment in Austin. Then you're back to square one.

After you pay taxes and your mortgage, you've got $3,295 left over in Chicago and $3,303 in Austin. That's an $8 difference. Per month. You'll spend more than that on your first grocery run.

City #1: What Nurses Need to Know About Chicago

Chicago's hospital scene is stacked. Northwestern Medicine, Rush University Medical Center, UChicago Medicine, Advocate Aurora—these are powerhouse systems with strong reputations. If you want to work in a top-tier academic medical center, Chicago delivers.

Union presence here is real. Illinois Nurses Association has serious bargaining power. That means better nurse-to-patient ratios, actual breaks, and protection when administration tries to cut corners. Benefits packages tend to be generous, especially pension contributions at the bigger systems.

The winters are brutal. We're talking negative temps and wind that cuts through every layer you own. But the housing market is way more reasonable than people think. You can buy a decent place in a good neighborhood without selling a kidney. Commutes can be long depending on where you live, but the CTA actually works if you're near the right lines.

City #2: What Nurses Need to Know About Austin

Austin's major players are Ascension Seton, St. David's HealthCare, and Baylor Scott & White. These are solid systems, but they're playing catch-up with the population explosion. The city grew 30% in the last decade. Hospitals are desperate for nurses, which means leverage if you know how to use it.

Texas is a right-to-work state. No unions to speak of. You're negotiating on your own, which can be good or bad depending on your skills. The no state income tax thing is nice, but property taxes in Texas are HIGH—they have to fund schools and roads somehow. That $522K house comes with a tax bill that'll make you wince.

The lifestyle is what people move here for. Sunshine, tacos, live music, a younger vibe. But traffic is a nightmare and getting worse. Housing costs are pushing nurses further out into the suburbs, which means longer commutes. And summer heat is no joke—we're talking 100+ degrees for weeks straight.

The Bottom Line

This is the perfect example of why salary numbers lie. Austin pays way more on paper. Chicago pays way less. But you end up with the same amount of money in your pocket.

Pick Chicago if you want union protection, established hospital systems, and affordable housing. Pick Austin if you want sunshine, a younger city vibe, and you're okay renting for a while. Don't pick Austin because you think you'll make more money. You won't.
